Dr. Jeffrey Aryee, a senior lecturer at the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has urged educators to view Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a collaborator rather than a replacement in the learning process.
Speaking at the College-Level session of the 11th KNUST Summer School, Dr. Aryee said AI has the potential to transform education if integrated strategically and responsibly.
He called for a shift from traditional teaching and assessment models to inquiry-based learning and evaluation methods that incorporate AI tools effectively.
“Timely adaptation to AI integration is crucial, as delays will only increase costs and hinder progress,” he said.
Dr. Aryee recommended the use of digital tools such as Research Rabbit, Zotero, and Dimension AI among others to enhance research and learning outcomes.
He also emphasized the need to align Ghana’s digital infrastructure with educational innovation, foster partnerships, and promote discipline-specific integration of AI technologies.
“We must embrace learning to dance with the robots,” he said. “In this new era, we are all robots, but it is up to us to set the rhythm and determine our own pace.”
The event, which formed part of efforts to equip faculty with practical AI skills, featured a hands-on, workshop led by Dr. Kwabena Owusu Agyemang of the Department of Computer Science.
The workshop introduced participants to assistive AI tools, prompt engineering, and other applications relevant to teaching and research.
Provost of the College of Science, Professor Leonard Kofitse Amekudzi, described AI as an immediate force reshaping academia.
He urged faculty members to reimagine classrooms and laboratories as dynamic ecosystems powered by intelligent systems that enhance teaching, learning, and innovation.
“AI is not a distant frontier; it is here, shaping how we teach, learn, and research,” he said. “Our task now is to integrate it thoughtfully, ensuring that innovation walks hand in hand with integrity, and progress with purpose.”
He added that the College would continue to strengthen its digital infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives to position KNUST at the forefront of responsible and transformative AI in education.
